See the guy playing the keyboard in this Youtube video?
That's Chris Stainton.
In 1971,
I spotted and picked Chris up, when he was walking along the Post Road
near the Clam House, in Westport, CT, when
Joe Cocker's Band was getting ready for a concert in
Madison Square Garden. They
were staying in Westport for 5 weeks, rehearsing for the
concert. Chris had run out of gas. I picked up
a container of gas, and brought him back to his rental
car. I started to physically push his car across the
Post road, with him steering, and another car pulled up. Several
black leather
jacketed guys jumped out of their car after noticing
that I was struggling to push the Rambler Matador up an
incline, near The Big Top restaurant. Those guys helped me to push the car the
rest of the way, and then jumped back into their
car, and drove away. Thanks guys! Stainton
offered to give me a ticket to the
concert in MSG in appreciation for helping him out. Bob
Rafter and I had a great time at the concert, and took
the milk train back to Westport.
Earlier that same week, Joe Cocker
had walked into Westport
National Bank, and walked up to me, a teller and
management trainee at the
time, to cash a check. I told him that I knew who he
was, and apologetically said that Bank policy was not to cash checks for non
customers (typical Bank). I suggested he speak with the Secretary and
get some money wired from his Beverly hills account to
our Bank. He did that and ended up opening an account,
along with the rest of the band. I met Chris Stainton,
the piano player, the next day. He was easy to recognize
by his Carnaby Street high heeled shoes. A couple weeks
later Nigel Thomas (Cocker's manager, and former Beatles
manager) walked up to me at the Westport Country
Playhouse, and handed me two tickets to the show in
Madison Square Garden. The tickets were on the Ground
Floor - 11th row center, amazing seats.
